THE GREAT CYCLE TRIP BARNES TO BRUGES

Parents and teachers from St Osmund's School Barnes (38 of them!) including a mixture of all ability riders embarked on a cycle to Bruges over two days

Why?

At St Osmund’s Catholic Primary School we aim to support our pupils to be active, socially aware citizens and this begins with encouraging pupil voice and serving/supporting those in our local community. In line with our school fundraising bike ride challenge, the pupil body voted to support Shooting Stars Children’s Hospices. It was a unanimous vote as they learnt about the support the charity provides to families of children with life limiting illnesses and families following the bereavement of a child.

Our school motto: Show Your Faith by the Way You Live is rooted in all that we do and is embodied by the desire of our pupils at St Osmund's to put their faith into action to support families in their time of need.

The team are looking for your support in the form of a donation to St Osmund's School and Shooting Star Children's Hospices, a charity chosen by the children of the school.

Who?

Some of the riders have gone from having almost no experience of riding at all to riding over 160+ miles in a weekend. This was no small challenge to get everyone there and WE ALL DID IT!!!!

How?

Training for the ride started all the way back in January with spin classes in darkest winter, and more than half of the team needing to find some form of road worthy bike to ride in the summer! Training continued every week through out the summer and on the 12th September 2025 the team of 38 embarked on a 2 day journey from Barnes to Bruges.

Day 1 - a physical endurance challenge with a very hilly 81 miles to Dover.

Day 2 - a mental endurance challenge, covering 82 flat miles with constant heavy rain throughout the whole day.

"WE BLOODY DID IT!!!" - Ant

“What a journey, I'm still processing it all! A lovely opportunity to keep raising money for a charity that must provide kindness to families in very dark times and for our children too.”- Anna W.

"Being part of such a remarkable school community is something I will always treasure. To have shared this accomplishment with such inspiring, kind, and dedicated people has been a true privilege." - Katie

“I have absolutely loved being part of this adventure right from those first ftp building sessions in ‘The Cave’. It’s been 2 years now since my youngest left St Osmund’s and it has been very special for me to still be part of the St Osmund’s community and meet so many new parents. You’re all amazing btw! Finding the time to train and working out the logistics to get away for a weekend with young children is not easy I know!” - Aoife

“Huge thanks to everyone who made this adventure unforgettable…it was worth every mile, both on the bike and off . It was a joy reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.” - Arianna

Day 1

Day 2

"Day 2 I was almost hypothermic" - Catherine

"I was so knackered forgot to turn Strava on day two - and before you say it Ali - yes I did do day two !" - Mark W.

"Even if you were in a wet suit you would have got wet" - Lou

"I would prefer to be giving birth because at least I'd be warm, dry and laying down right now" - Ella

"I had anticipated most obstacles but not dodging hundreds of conkers in the road and literally falling on our heads!" - Alex C.

“Huge props to everyone for getting to the finish line in those conditions  It’s been a blast getting to know so many lovely people over the last 9 months and looking forward to the next one!" - Jules

"Biblical even by hardy Belgium standards. A test of resilience and ability to source hot chocolate from the land of beer" - Laura-Ann

"I'd much rather do a day of 200km with two thirds of Everest climbing in the high mountains than ever have to deal with that again" - Oscar

The Stories

"Last weekend, I cycled to Bruges with 39 other parents

Months of training led up to this—spin classes, early mornings, and weekend rides squeezed between kids, work, and life and numerous trips up to London to ride with the group. Total madness… but also kind of amazing.

I started riding a few years ago to clear my head and escape the chaos. I’m not the fastest, and it’s always a challenge especially up the hills, it’s hard work. But I keep doing this for myself, my balance and to show my daughter that with effort and practice, anything is possible.

The Challenge is now complete and we arrived all safely to Bruges.

Day 2 was something else: 8 hours of cycling through relentless rain and storm. It pushed us to the edge: fatigue, tears, frustration. But the strength of our leaders, the unstoppable team spirit, and the girls’ camaraderie carried us through.

Brutal? Yes.

Unforgettable? Absolutely.

Would I do it again? Ask me once my legs forgive me

We rode for St Osmund’s School and Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, a charity chosen by the children. If you’d like to support, you can still donate" -
Arianna

"What a few days, I really the enjoyed the whole trip….despite some seriously low episodes. A group of very determined people pulling together, both for good cause and as a challenge to ourselves individually and as a team. Delighted I was able to get involved, even at a late stage, and it’s been lovely to get a to know a lot more of the St Osmund’s crew throughout all the training rides and this last weekend." - Ben

"Thank you for fundraising for such a wonderful charity. We are grateful for the support they provided to our friends with care nights that gave them the chance to rest and recharge so that they could continue taking the best care of their daughter. Shooting Stars offer invaluable help to a large number of children and their families like them so well done to you all" - Friend and colleague of Alex C.

"Less than a minute into our day 2 charity cycle ride the nagging rain took on a more physical force
and like an ice bucket challenge dumped a heavy stream of water on us at the red traffic light. The
heavens had opened! Does rain from heaven symbolise abundance and blessings? We were hoping
so, hoping that the charity donation total kept increasing by the time all the riders had rolled into
Bruges.

The traffic lights turned green and on we went, heads down against the wind. The riders rode
though Calais, Flanders, over the unassuming border into Belgium with the water attacking at every
angle, from the sky above, the back wheel from the cyclist in front, the puddles from below and the
passing lorries’ surface wave. We were getting colder and wetter by the minute but were fuelled by
coffee, dodgy tasting energy gels and most importantly the treasured messages from our children wishing us luck and love. The memories of the cheers and posters from the St Osmund’s school
community were summoned to distract us from our increasingly numb hands and feet. We continued pedalling.

There were slides, punctures, collisions into bushes, momentary “sense of humour failure”, falls,
wasp bites, escapes from a chasing Alsation dog, chain gangs to hold off the shivers, blurred vision,
saturated ‘waterproof’ clothing, uncontrolled shaking close to hypothermia. We wanted to overcome this sopping obstacle, riding together. As we approached Bruges along the canal, the rain lessened, the sun emerged, and a rainbow was spotted. We had done it! We had been determined to raise money for the kids at St Osmund’s to keep flourishing, and for Shooting stars childrens’ hospice. The amount of rainfall that fell during our 8 hours of cycling probably couldn’t come close to represent the amount of tears that must be shed by families with a child with a life limiting condition. We kept pedalling for a charity whose nurses and carers support brave, wonderful
children with complex medical needs, and provide holistic care for the family through to bereavement. We imagine they help the rainbows to be spotted as well as shooting stars."
